Booz Allen Hamilton and Kaggle, the online data science challenge community, announced the launch of the National Data Science Bowl, a first-ever online competition that will challenge the data science community to develop an algorithm that will advance the study of marine biology and ocean health. Data scientists, from the novice to expert level, will have 90 days to analyze more than 100,000 images of plankton provided by the Hatfield Marine Science Center with the goal of creating a "facial recognition" technology that will allow researchers to automatically identify and classify species of plankton.
