Chairman of North America
The Boston Consulting Group
Excellence in Leadership
It’s been a busy few years for Tom Reichert, Chairman of North America of The Boston Consulting Group. In January 2013, Reichert took over that role where he oversees the firm’s operations in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Since taking the helm, Reichert has launched several new initiatives aimed at accelerating growth, broadening expertise, and enhancing taking client service.
In addition to serving on the firm’s Executive and Operating Committees, he chairs the board of BCG Digital Ventures an innovation, product development, and commercialization business that partners with clients to rapidly create and advance digital products and platforms.
Despite a tough economic environment where some firms are having difficulty and the consolidation trend of recent years is continuing, Reichert says BCG is advancing strongly and gaining share, with double-digit revenue growth in North America.
“I’m especially proud that we’ve been able to strengthen our client relationships, serve more clients, and deepen our expertise across many industry and functional topics,” he says. “We’ve made great progress on our technology-oriented capabilities, including the launch of BCG Digital Ventures, the broadening and rebranding of our IT practice into “Technology Advantage,” and leading-edge thinking around Big Data issues.”
Reichert, of course, is no stranger to the technology space. Prior to 2013, Reichert served for three years as Global Leader of what was then BCG’s Information Technology practice and is now the Technology Advantage practice.
Before that, he led the IT practice in the Americas and the Operations and IT banking segment worldwide from 2007 to 2010.
Reichert says it’s a “privilege to help top executives at large organizations address their toughest problems. What I enjoy most is working collaboratively with them to surface new insights into their businesses, create highly customized strategies, help manage the change, and then deliver the value from the strategies. The trusted relationships that accrue over time are truly gratifying.”
What’s also gratifying, Reichert says, is getting up every day and being able to shape the future, together with his clients and teams. “Witnessing how technology can transform the way our clients do business, and our ability to help them harness the forces of globalization and good leadership,” he says.
Reichert calls the Top 25 Consultants Award a great honor. “But more importantly, I see it as an important acknowledgment of the journey that BCG is on—our recent successes and the moves we’re making to extend our leadership position in the industry,” he says.
“For our clients and our teams, it’s an acknowledgment of the value we’re delivering and the impact we’re having.”
What’s the biggest factor to your success? What motivates you to excel?
“I would point to three key factors: We have amazing people and an amazing team; Our culture of collaboration—across geographies, offices, and practices—allows us to bring the very best of BCG globally to our North American clients.; and, our reputation as a great place to work and our ability to recruit outstanding talent from industry and other consulting firms have allowed us to broaden and deepen our capabilities. What motivates me personally is the desire to be a catalyst for change.”
