It's time for CEOs to take back strategy, says Harvard Business School professor Cynthia Montgomery in The Strategist . If this sounds like a slap in the face of the entire consulting profession, which cut its teeth on advising strategy, you're right. The author points out that over the last 25 years, strategy has been outsourced to consultants and ousted from its rightful place as the defining responsibility of a leader. In doing so, she argues, strategy became a left-brain exercise and leaders lost all connection to how it fits into the day-to-day operations of a company. Intriguing, for sure. But in case the reader's not convinced, Montgomery rolls out several case studies—Gucci and Ikea to name a few—to hammer home her point, making this a must read for anyone in the strategic advisory space, for sure.
