Discount carrier Southwest Airlines submitted a binding $170 million bid to acquire Frontier Airlines. Pending the review by the bankruptcy court and approval by the U.S. Department of Justice. As of press time, the deal had not yet been completed. One piece of the offer suggests Southwest would acquire 80 percent of Frontier's Airbus planes while Frontier gradually shifts to use Southwest's Boeing 737s over the next 24 months. Frontier Airlines filed for bankruptcy protection in April of 2008. Southwest officials say the carrier would keep all existing Frontier routes, and add new nonstop routes from Denver not currently served by either airline. —C.N.
