DeSimone Consulting Engineering has named Joelle Nelson as a Principal within its forensic consulting practice. Based in the firm's New York City headquarters, Nelson joins the team to lead complex, large-scale forensic investigations and enhance the firm's capacity to identify and resolve the underlying causes of structural issues across the U.S.

In her new role, Nelson will oversee investigations involving structural failures, construction defects, and performance issues across various building types and structural systems. Leveraging her background in the design and renovation of long-span, high-rise, and historic structures, she will also provide expert witness services and play a critical role in shaping pre-litigation and litigation strategies for clients.

"We are thrilled to welcome Joelle Nelson to DeSimone to strengthen our forensics practice," said Stephen V. DeSimone, Chairman and CEO of DeSimone Consulting Engineering. "Her experience investigating the cause and origin of construction defects and structural failures, from catastrophic building and crane collapses to excessive building deflections, will enhance our ability to respond to our clients' most trying challenges."

Nelson joins the firm from SOCOTEC, where she served as Vice President. Her previous experience includes a long tenure at Thornton Tomasetti as an Associate Principal. Throughout her career, she has acted as a forensic structural engineering expert for a wide range of disputed matters, including insurance coverage, standard of care, and damage assessments following extreme weather events.

Her project portfolio includes work on high-profile landmarks such as the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church at the World Trade Center site and the structural analysis of the cast iron dome at the United States Capitol Building. Nelson currently serves on the New York City Department of Buildings 2023 Code Revision Structural Committee and holds both a Master of Science and Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Columbia University.

"I'm excited to bring my passion for forensic engineering as a leader in DeSimone's forensics practice," Nelson stated. "In investigating why failures occur, I can effectively assist clients in shaping litigation strategy and resolving disputes, while also advancing the field of engineering—and enhancing the performance of our own teams as we apply the lessons learned from failures to the development of future design solutions."
