The national law firm is launching a non-legal AI advisory practice to guide clients on governance, risk and implementation, marking a significant step into the technology consulting space.

National law firm Husch Blackwell announced the launch of a new AI advisory service operating under its business consulting subsidiary, Husch Blackwell Consulting (HBC). The new division, HBC AI Advisory Services, will provide non-legal business guidance to organizations navigating the challenges of adopting artificial intelligence.

The move signals a broader trend of professional services firms, particularly those in the legal sector, expanding into adjacent consulting fields to offer more comprehensive client support. HBC, which launched in 2025 with an initial focus on higher education, is now branching into the high-demand area of AI strategy. The new service aims to help clients with the practical business aspects of AI, distinct from formal legal counsel.

According to the firm, the AI advisory practice is structured to provide end-to-end guidance on AI adoption. The services are organized around four main areas: establishing a foundational AI strategy and assessing readiness; managing the adoption and scaling of pilot programs; building governance and risk management frameworks; and optimizing AI investments to ensure a return.

"Across industries, organizations are struggling to transition from experimentation to real, responsible use of AI," said Michael Yang, who will lead the new practice. "Our goal is to help them do that thoughtfully, building the right governance, scaling what works, and making sure AI delivers real value."

Yang joined Husch Blackwell in 2025 from Adobe and will lead the practice from within the firm's new Transformation Office. He is joined by Senior AI Consultant Eric DeChant and AI Consultant Mary Beth Millstone.

The creation of a dedicated AI consulting team backed by a major law firm allows Husch Blackwell to address both the strategic and compliance-adjacent concerns of its clients.

"The HBC AI team combines deep expertise in AI, compliance, and risk management with the backing of an innovative law firm," said Jamie Lawless, Chief Executive of Husch Blackwell. Lawless noted that this structure allows the firm to provide strategic advice that is "informed by and connected to" legal counsel as clients implement AI technologies.
