Mark Chicu, Senior Advisor, Cornerstone Research.

Move brings a key government veteran to the economic consulting firm’s competition practice, adding experience from high-profile cases including the JetBlue/Spirit merger review.

Cornerstone Research has appointed Dr. Mark Chicu, a former Acting Assistant Chief in the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), as a senior advisor. Based in Washington, D.C., Chicu joins the firm's antitrust and competition practice.

During his nearly five years at the DOJ, Chicu was involved in managing or leading more than twenty-five investigations into proposed mergers and business conduct across various industries. He supervised the economics teams in several notable cases, including the DOJ’s challenge to the JetBlue/Spirit merger and its litigation against Agri Stats, Inc.

His government work also included roles in cases such as U.S. v. Visa Inc. and Plaid Inc. and U.S. and Plaintiff States v. UnitedHealth Group Inc., and Amedisys, Inc. Additionally, Chicu served as an economics expert for the DOJ, providing testimony in the government's case against Booz Allen Hamilton.

"Mark’s wide-ranging experience and work on high-profile merger and conduct cases will be valuable assets to our clients," said Kostis Hatzitaskos, cohead of Cornerstone Research’s antitrust and competition practice. Hatzitaskos noted that Chicu joins a team of over 100 Ph.D. economists, many of whom also have prior experience at U.S. and international competition agencies.

Before his tenure at the DOJ, Chicu spent seven years at another litigation consulting firm. His academic research has focused on strategic firm interactions in pricing and investment. He holds Ph.D. and M.A. degrees in economics from Northwestern University.

"The expertise and collaborative spirit of Cornerstone Research’s team, paired with its network of academic affiliates, were significant factors in my decision to join," Chicu stated..
