Companies that provide transparent communication to employees during turbulent times are more successful, according to a new EX Intelligence Report from advisory and solutions firm WTW.
Why it matters: In an uncertain economic environment, the report frames internal communication not as a soft skill but as a key driver of financial performance. It suggests a direct link between leadership's ability to convey a clear strategy and the company's bottom line.
By the numbers: The report finds that 82% of employees in financially high-performing companies are more likely to say their leaders provide a clear mission and strategy compared with their peers in average-performing companies (76%).
- Similarly, 79% of employees in high-performing companies believe their leaders make a concerted effort to gather their opinions, compared to only 68% of employees in average-performing companies.
What they're saying: "As the economic landscape remains uncertain, companies that effectively communicate and bolster employee insights are likely to see better outcomes in terms of employee engagement and overall performance,” said Jill Havely, head of global community excellence, Employee Experience, WTW.
Between the lines: The report distinguishes high-performing companies by their ability to not only communicate but also to foster trust and offer transparent and equitable pay and benefits. This suggests that clarity around mission is just one piece of a larger puzzle involving a culture of two-way dialogue and trust.
