Consulting Magazine has announced the firms earning recognition as this year's Best Firms to Work For, which include 51 honorees in 4 categories: 9 (boutique), 18 (small), 16 (midsize) and 8 (large).

Based on employee satisfaction, Best Firms to Work For is the industry's largest and most in-depth survey assessing the best working environments for consulting professionals. The ranking has been an authoritative acknowledgement of professional service firms whose policies and practices support measurable investment and commitment to keeping employees happy, engaged and professionally fulfilled.

“A firm’s success is deeply tied to the satisfaction of its workforce,” said Michael A. Webb, Director at Consulting Magazine. “With competition for talent at an all-time high, it’s essential to leverage technology and intentional culture-building to offer environments where professionals can thrive and want to stay.”

Since 2000, Consulting Magazine has evaluated thousands of individual surveys from working consultants at more than 150 U.S. consulting firms – calculating quantifiable data, programmatic explanations, descriptions of operational excellence, employee engagement and outstanding work environments that set their workplaces above others.

This year’s census saw changes in the size categories for the participating firms. The classification for evaluation of the participating firms is based on the number of working, billable professionals. Adjusted from previous years’ breakouts of only large and small firms, there are now four size categories for evaluation:

  • Boutique firms, consisting of 20-50 billable personnel
  • Small firms, consisting of 51-249 billable personnel
  • Midsize firms, consisting of 250-999 billable personnel
  • Large firms, consisting of 1,000+ billable personnel

“Our goal was to enhance the return on time invested for survey participants,” Webb noted. “By refining size parameters for evaluation, we are able to deliver more useful insights. In an intensely competitive recruiting landscape, benchmarking a small firm against a much larger one can lead to misleading conclusions about culture and employee satisfaction.”

Best Firms to Work For rankings are based on responses to survey questions taken by the firm's consultants and consist of questions covering six areas of employee satisfaction: Culture, Career Development, Work/Life balance, Client Engagement, Compensation & Benefits and Firm Leadership.

“These firms have gone above and beyond in creating workplaces where their people feel valued, supported and empowered to grow,” Webb added. “It’s a reflection of real commitment to employee well-being and success.”
