Consulting Magazine has announced the opening of the nominations period for the highly coveted honor of The Best Firms to Work For. The industry's largest and most in-depth survey assessing best working environments based on employee satisfaction also announces expanded categories and benchmarking reports.

"We are excited to present this survey for the 24th year. What organization wouldn’t want to showcase itself as a great place to work?" said Consulting Magazine Director Michael A. Webb. "This survey is a true test, driven by direct employee feedback. It’s inspiring to see top firms prioritize exceptional work environments and professional growth, recognizing the people who make outstanding client service possible."

The Best Firms to Work For rankings, showcases those management consulting firms whose policies and practices support their investment and commitment to keep their employees happy, engaged and professionally fulfilled. Each year consultants from more than 150 U.S. consulting firms submit several thousand individual surveys providing quantifiable data, programmatic explanations, descriptions of operational excellence, employee engagement and outstanding work environments that set their workplaces above others.

Innovations for 2025

Expanded categories: Best Firms has expanded the basic classifications for assessment and evaluation based on firm size. Adjusted from previous years’ breakouts of large and small firms, there are now four classes for evaluation:

  • Boutique firms, consisting of 20-50 billable personnel
  • Small firms, consisting of 51-249 billable personnel
  • Midsize firms, consisting of 250-999 billable personnel
  • Large firms, consisting of 1,000+ billable personnel
Benchmarking data: As the data collected in the process of evaluating thousands of individual surveys is of immense value, each qualifying, participating firm will receive a basic benchmarking report including the firm’s raw scores and its placement in six categories measured by the survey. Those categories include culture, compensation and benefits, career development, client engagement, work/life balance, and leadership.

Multiple levels of expanded bespoke reports are also be available and include: category scores for all survey questions; open-ended responses, comments and feedback on various topics from employees; category scoring measured against top 3 firms in aggregate. These additional reports vary in cost.

“We felt it was important to raise the return on time invested to those firms that participate in the survey,” explained Webb. “Providing more relevant class-matching increases the value for them. In a highly competitive space of recruiting and retention, comparing the work environment and overall employee satisfaction between a firm of 50 consultants versus a firm consisting of 1,500 may not always be a relevant comparison.”

Why should my firm participate?

The ability to evaluate where your firm stands among your competitors is inherently valuable. Best Firms to Work For reveals where your firm is positioned in the market and can provide competitive information to help build better company culture, decrease turnover, increase engagement and productivity and gain a competitive advantage by building a firm that will attract and retain the best talent.

Without benchmarking data from employees, certain decisions are made without proper reference. Utilization of reporting and comparative firm data can provide an edge through a clear understanding of where your firm stands, and where it needs to navigate, in terms of overall decision making, productivity, innovation and potential risk.

The annual survey ranks employee satisfaction in the following categories:

  • Culture
  • Career Development
  • Client Engagement
  • Compensation & Benefits
  • Firm Leadership
