In the beginning it was gold. Then it became oil. Now, data is the most valuable currency on our planet. But it is also Pandora's Box, bringing myriad considerations regarding its acquisition, retention, protection and as importantly, the RISK of having it in your possession.

In an effort to bring together the leaders of our profession and take stock of what has happened during the past three years, Consulting Magazine is hosting a full-day industry summit, Industry Waypoint: Disruption. Evolution. Response., Sept. 14 in New York City. The programming will assess the effects on the consulting sector and investigate how to best navigate the challenges we know still lie ahead.

One of the more eye-opening panels of the conference is titled: The War on Data: Costs, Risks and Future of Our Most Valuable Currency. This panel will examine the ethical implications of holding and managing data, the life-or-death ramifications of mismanaging it, and how far behind the technology curve corporations (and those who advise them) are when it comes to protecting it.

As in war, superior strategic and tactical planning is required to achieve victory. Four industry leaders will walk us through the cultural shifts, light-speed technology advances and calculated governance necessary to protect an organization's use and handling of data; the transformative role of these elements for strategic evolutionary planning; and the nuclear consequences of just one breach.

Vanessa Pawlak, Vice President, Global Leader, Government HHS, IBM Consulting

"U.S. corporations are essentially fighting World War 3 – and America is at the mall," notes panelist Vanessa Pawlak, Vice President, Global Leader, Government HHS with IBM Consulting.

The potential for disaster is imminent if this is not taken seriously. The bad guys are utilizing weapons-grade technology to get to our information and most companies are not up to the task of defending against them.

Kate Graeff, Vice President, Enterprise Trust, Deloitte

Other panelists offering insights will be Kate Graeff, Vice President, Enterprise Trust with Deloitte and
