As much as possible, Vida Williams says she has attempted to build a career in data and technology where she can be a beacon for other women. "There are so few women who achieve decision-making roles in data and technology. Winning this award means that there is one more opportunity for women to see, champion, and emulate women who are doing impactful work within the industries. Kudos to Consulting Magazine for highlighting women in this way."
Williams' greatest professional achievement is also her greatest personal achievement. "I'm an advocate for women to not succumb to the 'have it all' pressure and instead cultivate a life with a mission, where all activities can positively impact and progress their purpose." She is also very active in her community, sitting on boards and community panels, coaching, and mentoring. "In 2020, I was asked to serve as both Chief Data Officer AND Chief Diversity Officer, which has allowed me to unite my very active, lifelong, community-driven mission with my work."
As far as industry challenges she faces, she shares this story, "I was in a meeting with another Chief Data Officer just yesterday and our opening statement was how amazing it was to see another friendly female face. We both remarked on how our days are filled with meetings with male peers. It is very easy for intelligence, insight, and perspective to be dismissed in critical discussions when you have a marginalized voice."
Q&A: What would you say is the best advice (consulting or otherwise) you've ever received?
"The best advice I've ever received is to be powerful in my authenticity. I was counseled to not conform to any industry standard of presentation and being. I believe I was able to embrace my perspective as a Black Woman in America and empower it to positively influence an industry regarding privacy, governance, and accountable data engineering."
