Excellence in Leadership

Mark McCall says he ended up in consulting by both accident and design. McCall knew the best way to enter the profession was at a consulting firm, but it was a difficult job market and he says he lucked out getting his first job at the leading firm at the time. "I quickly realized that being a consultant, working for numerous clients and helping them solve critical issues, was where I could thrive," he says. "The consulting profession fit with my personality and interests, and while I moved firms early in my career, I've never regretted the decision."

During his first internship, McCall was thrown into the deep end of the pool. He had the rare opportunity to write a speech for the CEO of Kraft.  "It is ultimately what started my career and I ended up writing for him for several more years," he says.

Personal successes aside, McCall says the biggest factor in my success is the team that he works with every day. "I would not be where I am without them and I am inspired to work harder, think bigger and reach further professionally because of them," he says.

The challenge of finding the best people in our industry and come together as a strong, cohesive team to build an exceptional business is what has motivated him over the course of his career, he says.

And what does he enjoy most about the consulting profession?

"That every day brings a new challenge and the job is never the same," McCall says. "Not every challenge is as extraordinary as the pandemic crisis we are working through right now, but it is in a long line of events and challenges that keep the job interesting."

Ask him what he is most looking forward to over the next 12 months and McCall says: "Getting on a plane and meeting with clients and my colleagues face to face."

Wouldn't that be nice?

Q&A: What does winning Consulting's Top 25 Award mean to you?

McCall: "It means I've been doing this a very long time."
