Laura Becker, an Analyst with ALM Intelligence, recently sat down with Padma Parthasarathy, Global Head of Consulting and Digital Transformation at Tech Mahindra. Parthasarathy heads a global team of 2,500 consultants engaged in business consulting, as well as technology and business process advisory and re-engineering services.

ALM intelligence: Last year, Forbes ranked Tech Mahindra No. 15 globally—and the No. 1 publicly traded company outside the U.S.—in the Top 100 companies that shape the digital world. What's your vision for the firm over the next few years?

Parthasarathy: We believe that digital is the disruption and transformation of businesses and society enabled by evolving technology. As part of our TechMNxt philosophy, we constantly invest in next generation capabilities in consulting and technology, which we adapt to clients' businesses through our digital themes: Digital Strategy & Design, Digital Customer, Intelligent Operations and Future Enterprise. Through these services, and our vertical domain expertise, we help clients to delight their customers, operate efficiently and become future-ready.

ALM intelligence: Tech Mahindra talks a lot about dare to design  (#unlockexperiences and #unlocktheNXT).  Can you explain what you mean and perhaps give a client example?

Parthasarathy: To realize the potential of a connected future, we need to create extraordinary digital, physical and convergent experiences. When we say #unlockexperiences, we are challenging ourselves, our clients and the rest of the tech community to collaborate to push boundaries and create solutions that will truly change the way we live and work. For example, we're working with Rakuten in Japan to power the next generation networks, through a world-class 5G ready network lab which will be the first of its kind in the industry. This will enable industries as diverse as healthcare, manufacturing and financial services to unlock the power of 5G use cases. To enable the Future Enterprise, we've invested in nine Makers Labs across the globe, that focus on design-based co-innovation with our clients to show how disruptive, leading-edge technologies can be applied to their businesses.

ALM intelligence: AI seems to be an integral part of the digital journal for Tech Mahindra and your clients.  What investments have you made and how do you see AI (#AI4Action), transforming your clients' businesses?

Parthasarathy: While there are a number of technologies that will continue to shape the future, AI has the potential to revolutionize the business world, making businesses more relevant to their customers, and providing more opportunities for disruption.  At Tech Mahindra, we have an AI First strategy that we are driving with our clients to accelerate their digital transformation.  AI First promotes a consulting-led and platform-powered approach to discover the right opportunities, as well as to implement them rapidly, using our rich set of industry use-cases and solutions. We look at solutions from two perspectives:  AI-Inside: where we embed AI to make our clients' operations more efficient and enable a digital-ready workforce; and AI-Outside: where we apply AI to reimagine their products and services through smarter insights.  Tech Mahindra has invested in over a dozen automation and AI platforms, collectively termed AQT, to drive industrialization and adoption across service lines and industries.

ALM intelligence: You've invested in reskilling and upskilling your workforce. Why is this so important?

Parthasarathy: Digital has created a demand for professionals who are proficient in next-generation technologies and their application. To stay ahead of the market curve on digital technologies, we have made reskilling core to our strategy at Tech Mahindra. As part of TechMNxt, we have identified RADIQAL (extensible Reality, Automation & AI, Distributed Ledger, IOT, Quantum Computing, All powered by 5G) as the technology of the future. While skilling our people in each of these areas is very important, it is also important to have the right mix of "full-stack" skilled associates who can design and build business solutions across multiple technology areas. To this end, our NAD (New Age Delivery) platform allows us to dynamically identify demand for new skills and encourages associates to drive their own reskilling by choosing courses online and getting industry-recognized certification.
