Stephen Holbrook / Schellman & Company

Excellence in Public Sector

Ask Stephen Halbrook what's been the biggest factor to his success so far and he'll say, above all other things, "not only being presented with opportunities at the firm, but excelling with those opportunities through work ethic and dedication to the firm's vision of 'Quality, above all.'

Halbrook is a Principal at Schellman & Company and is a FedRAMP and FISMA practice leader and assists with service delivery across all service lines including SOC, PCI-DSS, ISO, FedRAMP, FISMA and HIPAA services.

In addition, Habrook also helps assist large and complex organizations that have multiple compliances needs helping them strategically align their efforts to maximize cost and efficiencies. He has more than 12 years of experience performing attestation and compliance examinations. Prior to Schellman, Halbrook was with Deloitte's Audit and Enterprise Risk Services group. He has a Bachelor of Science in Decision Information Systems, and a Master of Science in Business Administration—both from the University of Florida.

Over the last 12 months, he says his proudest accomplishment includes a variety of achievements, but he'll narrow it down to two in particular. One, "having played an integral part in the growth of the federal services revenue," he says. "And two, that the firm is currently the No. 2 provider of these services in the country as noted in the FedRAMP.gov website for number of cloud service providers assessed and authorized."

Pretty impressive stuff, but ask him to go back a little further… well, a lot further and talk about his proudest achievements over the course of his entire Schellman career and he'll share three: The development and growth of markets and service lines within the firm; the hiring and development of teams in various regions within the firm; and, the development of leaders within the firm that have gone on to help lead service lines and markets within the firm.

It's no surprise then, that he says the people that he works with and the "team first" attitude at the firm are what he enjoys most about consulting.

"While we can often get into the weeds of things as part of the day to day work that we do, we don't lose sight of the bigger picture and that we're working toward the goals of the firm and team as a whole," Halbrook says. "The profession is ever changing and with that there are new challenges presented on a daily basis."

Working with some of the most talented, intelligent and hardworking people in the industry and the healthy level of competition within the firm, keeps him motivated and continues to help him excel. That, and "consulting work is professional services and there is a constant motivation to exceed client expectations," he says.

Q&A: What does winning the Top 25 award mean to you, your firm and your clients?

Halbrook: "Being in the Top 25 is a testament to the quality of people at the firm, the level of service we provide to our clients and a reminder of the talent within the industry overall."
