Edge Strategy
A New Mindset for Profitable Growth
By Alan Lewis and Dan McKone
Harvard Business Review Press, 200 pages; $30
Here is the main premise of Edge Strategy: Companies can accelerate growth by finding new uses for their existing assets. Sounds simple but it's not. Desperate for growth, too many companies lurch into unfamiliar industries typically through acquisitions, more often than not destroying shareholder value in the process, say authors Alan Lewis and Dan McKone, both L.E.K. Consulting Managing Directors. Instead, they argue, companies should look to the periphery of their business where they can find new options to add to their products, new services to offer their customers and entirely new business lines that can be constructed out of existing capabilities.
