11. Wilson Perumal & Company
Wilson Perumal is a Strategy, Complexity & Operations firm that takes standards seriously. Since its inception, the Dallas, Texas based company has grown its headcount slowly and deliberately, hiring just 1 percent of applicants.
The firm's hiring is selective because it wants to ensure only those who are relentlessly committed to helping guide clients through transformational change can call themselves Wilson Perumal consultants.
"We are very supportive of one another in the pursuit of excellence. It's a case of throwing you in the deep end of the pool, but with a lifeline. We want to attract people who want to see how good they really are. We are passionate about ideas, and a lot of work flows into implementation. At the end of the day, we believe we continue to grow because we help companies change, not just deliver them a report," Says Managing Partner Stephen Wilson.
The team rallies together behind a common goal: helping global companies solve some of their most difficult issues and building a strategy firm for a complex and changing business environment.
"Talk to anyone in the firm and there is a tremendous sense of ownership, urgency and focus. We fundamentally believe that the world has changed: that today companies are facing up to an increasingly complex world, with impacts on strategy, organization and operations. And we believe that we are the strategy firm that can best help these organizations. We have developed specific methodology and experience, and have purpose-built a unique team over time, that is well suited to some of these business challenges," Managing Partner Andrei Perumal says.
Wilson Perumal & Company scored highly in our Client Engagement and Work/Life Balance categories, in part for its outside the box approach to travel. For every night a Wilson Perumal consultant spends away from home, the firm pays a bonus. But not to the consultant, to their spouse.
"While travel is commonplace both in consulting and in industry, we think that acknowledgement of the rigors of travel can perhaps make it more sustainable," says Wilson.
Wilson and Perumal both are hoping the return of the firm to our Best Small Firms to Work For list, on which it also appeared in 2011, will help it continue to attract solid candidates. "We're a small firm having a big impact—on our clients, through our team and with our ideas. This recognition is a great celebration for the firm and a reflection of how the team feels about our sense of mission, our ambition and what we've achieved to date," says Wilson.
Why would people want to join Wilson Perumal?
Stephen Wilson, Managing Partner, says: "People join us to get the opportunity to help large organizations with some of their toughest issues, to help companies compete in a complex world. We don't have all the answers, but we are thinking about these issues more seriously and more deeply than pretty much anyone out there. Another reason consultants seek to join us is to help build the next top consulting firm. We have a great deal of respect for firms like BCG today, but we imagine that it would have been a very different dynamic (and more fun) helping build BCG in the early days. This is something we keep top of mind as we continue to grow. Certainly, what we're trying to do isn't easy, but we have great candidates seeking to join us for that very reason. At the end of the day, we are all striving for something significant."
