8. Deloitte Consulting
Ask a Deloitte consultant if they're challenged by their work and think it makes a difference and they'll say yes. Well, we did just that, and this year the firm topped all other firms when employees were asked how interesting they find their work, and also secured the top spot among the Multi-Service firms we surveyed. That's part of the reason the firm held steady in the No. 8 position on the Best Firms to Work For list this year.
The New York-based multi-service consulting firm has been a frequent fixture on the Best Firms list, and prides itself on finding passionate people who want to put as much into their career as they hope to get back.
"Our practitioners are engaged in their client work, they feel challenged and fulfilled, and there's a sense of being connected with the individuals on their team and at the same time part of something bigger than themselves," says Jim Moffatt, Chairman and CEO of Deloitte Consulting.
Communication is a big part of that commitment. Moffatt says he makes a point to meet with the firm's consultants to hear what's on their minds and get a pulse of the organization, and frequently walks away from those meetings feeling energized by the employees' positivity and enthusiasm.
The firm has grown considerably over the past five years, doubling its headcount to more than 27,000 billable consultants. But with that growth, the firm has redoubled its commitment to an inclusive, team-centered environment.
"We've put a real emphasis on programs to help make sure that as we grow, our people still feel like they are part of a smaller firm that more naturally has a personal connection with its people. We've focused on implementing flexibility and predictability practices that address our people's work-life balance needs. We've invested in project-based development so our people know we're invested in their careers and helping to shape leaders at every level," says Moffatt.
Part of that emphasis on shaping leaders involves instilling knowledge in its workers that will follow them throughout their entire career, be it at Deloitte or another firm.
"We're committed to our people even beyond their tenure at Deloitte. While many choose to stay and build their career at our firm, some will join clients and others will pursue an entirely different track. Regardless, we aim to provide everyone a great experience and the skills they need to be successful while they're here. We want to embody a culture of apprenticeship, supporting people, finding roles that stretch their skills, and developing careers that include a full range of experiences," Moffatt says.
Moffatt says being named a Best Firm means a great deal to everyone up and down Deloitte's ranks, as well as with its clients.
When you look at the remainder of this year and 2015, what excites you?
Jim Moffatt, Chairman and CEO, says: "It's certainly a dynamic time for the consulting industry. The pace of change is faster than ever and that creates complex challenges for our clients, which means new opportunities for our firm. For the next year, three items come immediately to mind – enhancing our global capacity, building on our commitment to innovation, and expanding our reach into industry ecosystems. As our clients expand their footprint globally, there are many opportunities for us to help them boldly enhance their capabilities abroad, particularly in their fastest growing markets. This also creates valuable career opportunities for our practitioners."
