12. Cumberland Consulting
By any measure, it's been a pretty good year at Cumberland Consulting, The Franklin, Tenn.-based IT consultancy increased revenue more than 30 percent and Jim Lewis, the firm's Managing Partner & CEO was named a Top 25 Consultant by Consulting magazine. But even those two distinctions take a back seat to the fact the firm returns to the best Small Firms to Work For list for the fifth time, up two spots from last year's rankings. And, not to be overlooked, Cumberland is also preparing to celebrate its 10th Anniversary.
"Next year marks Cumberland's 10th anniversary and our 5th time as a Best Small Firm," Lewis says. "We have grown a great deal and are proud that we have continued to uphold the standards and practices that define our company, our corporate culture and our commitment to our employees throughout the numerous changes we've faced during the past decade."
Lewis says that any consulting firm is only as good as its consultants. He understands that enhancing the work experience and quality of life consultants positively impacts their careers and overall success, facilitates outstanding performance for clients and the patients they serve, and translates into success for the firm.
"We've always been passionate about our commitment to our employees and consider them first in just about every decision we make. We've always believed that our team deserves outstanding benefits and we encourage frequent, open dialogue with employees at all levels as to how we can promote health and happiness throughout the organization," he says. "Our company's unique culture centers on Cumberland being a great place to work. We maintain a sharp focus on our identity and on the values of our company in everything we do."
In addition, Lewis says he is a big believer in transparency by sharing business plans, growth strategies and financial details with all Cumberland employees, which is a bit unusual but goes to his goal of building a cohesive team to serve clients.
"We're building a team with diverse sets of skills and experience, which positions us to provide solutions addressing current and long-term priorities of focus for our clients," he says. "Our consultants are unique in being personally committed to the success of our clients and their projects, in valuing and promoting teamwork and cohesion over internal competition and in the impeccable standards for excellence we see them uphold in both their personal and professional endeavors."
ON THE SURVEY, THE FIRM SCORED HIGHEST IN LEADERSHIP & COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS. WHY?
Jim Lewis, Managing Partner & CEO, says: "Our leadership style is to keep the rules and bureaucracy to a minimum and to work with individual employees to do what is best for them and for our business. It has always been important for the Partners and firm leadership to remain accessible and approachable and to maintain hands-on involvement in the performance management process for employees at all levels as we continue to grow. We believe that all employees should share in the success of our company and we administer a bonus program that accomplishes that objective. We also frequently monitor each employee's salary against market benchmarks. We also feel our employees deserve outstanding benefits and work hard to provide benefits that will be valued by our people."
