The Boston Consulting Group 2. The Boston Consulting Group

The Boston Consulting Group is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, quite an accomplishment for one of the hallmarks of the consulting profession. Here's another one: There's only one consulting firm that can say it's been a Best Firm to Work For every single year the since the survey launched 13 years ago—BCG.

"Our focus is on delivering exceptional value for clients and on attracting, developing and retaining the best possible team of professionals. Within that context, we appreciate the recognition of being named one of the Best Firms to Work For," says Tom Reichert, BCG's Chairman of North and South America. "While we're not driven by external honors, [we] do appreciate it when our distinctiveness is highlighted."

In fact, the firm has not only been on the list all this time, but it's never been ranked lower than No. 5. Which is an absolutely astounding display of consistency. When asked about it, Reichert alludes to the words of Bruce Henderson, BCG's founder—"BCG exists for its people, not the other way around."

Reichert says that spirit is more alive today at BCG than ever before. "We continue to make major investments in our people," he says. "We want to make sure everyone is well equipped to handle the diverse assignments they'll see in the years to come."

That's the biggest reason, he says, morale at the firm is off the charts these days. Aside from the Best Firms to Work For ranking, BCG does its own internal evaluation; and, according to BCG's latest annual employee survey, employee satisfaction is the highest it's ever been. "We have been marking our 50th anniversary with a host of special celebrations, and it's been a unique opportunity to reflect on our heritage of helping clients change the game in their industries."

For clients, BCG is unique in its ability to work collaboratively to translate those insights into lasting impact and value, he says. "Our breadth of capabilities and global reach are also a source of distinctiveness."

As a result, he says BCG is well positioned to continue gaining share, regardless of any macroeconomic uncertainty in the months and years ahead. "Because of our highly customized approach and collaborative work style, we are uniquely suited to help clients figure out how to win in volatile, fast-changing environments, where you cannot simply use the past to predict the future," he says.

The Boston Consulting Group ON THIS YEAR'S SURVEY, THE FIRM SCORED HIGHEST IN THE AREAS OF COMPENSATION & BENEFITS AND LEADERSHIP. WHY DO YOU THINK THAT IS?
Tom Reichert, BCG's Chairman of North and South America, says: "We benchmark total pay to the top quartile of the management consulting industry. We think it's important to pay our people well because we want to retain them and because we think they're worth it. We're also very transparent with our staff about how their compensation will increase as their careers progress. Regarding leadership, I think this speaks to the heart of our model. Every partner is equal in terms of voting rights, regardless of seniority. That means it's an unusually democratic, non-hierarchical and open culture—within the partnership and throughout the firm—and one that can embrace change quickly."
