Sandy Williamson 5) CapTech

CapTech sure knows how to make an entrance. In its first time even qualifying for the Best Firms to Work For survey, CapTech leaps several perennial powerhouses to make its debut at No. 5. Not bad for a firm that began in the 1990s with the goal of being "the best high end IT management consulting firm in Richmond, Va.," says Sandy Williamson, CEO and Co-Founder of CapTech.

Now, with additional offices in Philadelphia, Charlotte, N.C., and Washington D.C., he says he is "honored" to be included among the Best Firms to Work For. "When we started the firm 17 years ago, the founding partners wanted to create a firm with an environment and culture that would enable us to recruit and retain the best and the brightest consultants," he says. "This award validates that we have built a place where employees like to come to work."

Williamson says many of Cap-Tech's consultants have been with the firm since the start and its retention rates are well above industry average. "This award recognizes the programs we've put in place to recognize and care for our consultants and will help increase our brand recognition with recruits in new markets," Williamson says. "Morale is very high and it's a very exciting time at CapTech."

CapTech Headquarters That also could be because the firm grew over 30 percent in 2012 by helping Fortune 500 and state government clients design and deploy leading edge portal and mobile solutions. In addition, the firm has implemented new training programs in the portal and mobile space.

"Over three years ago in strategic planning sessions, we made a commitment to invest in platforms, process and people to help us meet increasing client demand," he says. "Those investments are paying off in 2012 and will help us in 2013."

And listening to employees, it appears, is also paying off. In response to consultant feedback earlier this year, CapTech launched the Women's Technical Leadership Coalition (TLC) and the CapTech Cares Wellness Program. "Both are designed to provide professional, social, and healthy lifestyle opportunities to our consultants to support their work/life balance," he says.

It's already working. Work/Life balance was one of the survey areas where CapTech excelled. "In an industry that requires consultants to travel full-time, Monday through Thursday, week after week around the country, CapTech has committed to a model where consultants work where they live," Williamson says. "Billable targets are set at 40 hours per week, allowing our employees to have a healthy balance between their personal and work lives."

Q&A: What's unique about CapTech?

Sandy Williamson, CEO and Co-Founder, says: "CapTech blends high quality consultants with lots of experience and a commitment to client success. Especially when compared to the named national services providers, CapTech provides this quality with lower overall overhead costs and lower employee turnover. CapTech's ability to provide a fun, hardworking, and dynamic atmosphere for our consultants enables them to in turn provide the highest quality of service to our clients. From an industry standpoint, we have a solid understanding of how to help clients enhance their SOA platforms to handle the proliferation of mobile devices and develop applications that leverage these new platforms to meet their strategic business objectives."
