Excellence in Leadership
It is not all that often that consulting partnerships successfully come together. And there's a good reason for that—it's very difficult to accomplish and requires outstanding leadership on both sides of the transaction. Count PwC and PRTM as a success, and lot of the credit goes to Scott Hefter, who served as the Global Managing Director of PRTM, which had some 120 Partners and 800 employees, before the acquisition last year.
Integrating those employees into PwC is where a lot of Hefter's energy has been centered. He's provided the leadership, foresight and courage to guide it.
"It's been a challenging, exciting and ultimately extremely successful effort to gain consensus from PRTM's 120 global partners around a common vision for our future," says Hefter, now a Principal with PwC and leader of the PwC PRTM Advisory Services team.
"The decision process and execution of the acquisition plan was accomplished while still maintaining PRTM's operating performance to plan."
Today, well into the first year of the acquisition, the two are a fully integrated part of the PwC powerhouse, helping clients achieve growth, innovation and a competitive advantage, Hefter says.
"When we combine analytical rigor with the courage to explore uncharted territory together with our clients, we are shaping the future course of global business," he says. "That is at the heart of our consulting strategy and vision—it's using sound business judgment, experience, and facts to help build a platform for our clients' future."
Within the organization, Hefter says he's motivated to do all he can do to help create an environment that enables people to achieve their personal and professional aspirations. Each day, on his drive home or back to the hotel, Hefter says he asked himself the question: Did I add value today?
One way he adds value is by passing on what he's learned—take control of your own destiny—to younger consultants. "At the end of the day, no one cares as much about your career as you do, so get involved." he says. "Gain some real experience outside of your home country as early as possible in your career. Business is global now; the big issues your clients face will require you to have real knowledge about their industry globally."
And finally, "If you're passionate about the work, you will enjoy it more, and the client and your leadership will take notice."
Q&A: What stands out most about the work you do?
"My No. 1 professional passion these days is doing whatever I can to help build a great global management consulting business across the network here at PwC. One of the critical path items is ensuring that the legacy PRTM team settles well into PwC and contributes strongly to the team. I feel fortunate to have a role where I can help people connect with other teams and explore new ideas, capabilities and solutions we can bring to our clients. I thrive on connecting new dots and creating new opportunities—ones that often exist in the "white space" between internal structures and solutions."
