Excellence in Healthcare

Elaine Remmlinger joined what would eventually become Kurt Salmon's Health Care IT Practice in 1983 and led the practice for 12 years. During that time, she conducted over 750 engagements with over 200 clients.

Some client relationships span more than two decades, and she's concluded business deals with industry vendors exceeding $5 billion.

"This is a particularly challenging time for the healthcare industry. Health care reform has necessitated that providers re-examine business plans, become more efficient and effective, and explore new strategic partnerships and care delivery models," says Remmlinger, a Senior Partner with Kurt Salmon.

"I often say that IT is like a mirror to the rest of a health care provider organization. If IT is not working effectively, the organization as a whole probably isn't either. This has never been truer than today, when information technology has become an essential tool to meet new demands."

And electronic health records are being actively implemented to enable these strategic initiatives, transform operations, and meet regulatory requirements including Meaningful Use and ICD-10. "Turning data into information, consolidating and standardizing operations, and leveraging technology advances are all being actively pursued," she says.

Remmlinger says her success has resulted from four key factors—keeping my finger on the pulse of the industry, nurturing client relationships, providing outstanding service and having passion for what I do. She says her relationships have largely been built on referrals from one client to another—the best testament of success—and being invited back for repeated engagements.

"Many of my CIO clients have looked to me not just for advice but for personal career advancement," she says. "This level of trust is earned over many years of close working relationships."

She also says she likes to think that her influence on the industry goes beyond her own clients. "In my role as a trusted advisor to the nation's leading and most complex providers, I've had the privilege of guiding the IT strategies of the organizations that many others look to for leadership, direction and examples of best practices."

Remmlinger says the Top 25 award is "an important recognition and further indication that I should keep doing what I've been doing—developing innovative strategies to address some of the health care industry's most complex IT issues."

Q&A: What motivates you to excel?

"Doing my best and meeting commitments are non-negotiable to me. If my clients are successful, then I am successful. This means doing whatever it takes to develop innovative solutions to complex challenges. It is these traits I instill in others whom I have mentored and who have gone on to be very successful in their own careers."
