Bain & Company announced that it will launch a Washington D.C. office; and said that it has tapped Phil Kleweno to be the new office's managing director.
Kleweno, who is the former chief executive of Princess Cruises and president of Teleflora, is a leader in Bain's global Retail and Higher Education Practices. He specializes in developing top-line growth strategies for mid-sized companies, often those owned by private equity sponsors, in industries as diverse as consumer and retail, hospitality, media and publishing, financial services and e-commerce.
In addition to his work in the private and commercial sectors, Kleweno is a recognized expert in the higher education sector, most recently leading a comprehensive turnaround at a major multi-campus state university, helping to resolve entrenched and protracted budget and planning issues.
"We look forward to Phil's leadership in building upon our successful history of creating real results for Bain clients served in the greater Washington, D.C. market," says Dave Johnson, regional managing director of Bain's operations in the Americas . "Washington, D.C. is also an increasingly important destination for the top talent Bain & Company needs to recruit and retain to support the growth of our business."
Kleweno began his career at Bain in 1985 in the firm's Boston office. He has also worked in the firm's London, Moscow, San Francisco, New York offices, and was a founding member of the firm's Los Angles office. He left Bain in 2001 to take on the role of president of Princess Cruises, where he led the 14,000-employee company through the turbulent times following 9/11.
From 2004 to 2006, Kleweno also served as president and CEO of Teleflora, a privately-held flower delivery and wire service company that provides products and services to its 20,000 flower shop members.
"Phil is a seasoned veteran whose experience, both as a corporate executive and as a leading advisor to management teams in diverse industries, is a perfect match for the business needs Bain finds in the greater Washington D.C. market," says Johnson. "He is a sought after advisor by C-suite executives and by the many teams he has helped to mentor and develop throughout his career."
Last week, Bain announced that it would open its first offcie in Turkey in Instanbul, a historic center of commerce and the economic base of one of Europe's most resilient economies. The new office, Bain's 20th in Europe, establishes its official footprint in a region that the firm has served clients in for more than 30 years.
"Opening our first Turkish office is a testament to the increasing demand from our clients who are investing heavily in this area of the world," says Bob Bechek, Bain & Company's worldwide managing director. "Since Bain started working in Turkey, we have been advising a widening portfolio of clients in the region, accumulating extensive local knowledge and delivering an excellent record of results. Opening an office in Istanbul further demonstrates our long-term commitment to this country."
Bain Partner Karaca Kestelli, a member of the firm's Financial Services Practice, will lead the office with Roberto Fiorello, a partner in the firm's Telecommunications, Media & Technology Practice.
