With Google searches for "Bain" reaching all time highs over the last few months, and the Bain brand being bandied about by presidential hopefuls, Bain & Company decided to take matters into its own hands by posting a "Frequently Asked Election Year Questions About Bain & Company" on its Web site.

In the document, Bain set out to set the record straight on what it calls "election year confusion," including the fact that "Bain & Company and Bain Capital are separate companies, with no shared ownership or governance." In addition, it points out that "Bain & Company is not a private equity firm," and that Bain & Company is "the world's leading advisor to the private equity industry and its stakeholders."

Facts, undoubtedly many folks are aware of, but still the firm deemed necessary to re-iterate in an official statement at this point.

The posting then goes on to say that one of the firm's alumni—Mitt Romney—is running for the Republican nomination for President of the United States. "We are very proud to see our alumni fulfill their aspirations and contribute to global business and government affairs," it states, before clearing up a few more points.

"Mr. Romney worked at Bain & Company from 1977 to 1985, leaving the firm in 1985 as a vice president to help found Bain Capital. Mr. Romney rejoined Bain & Company in the early 1990s to play a key role in our turnaround, leading the successful effort to restructure our debt and reorganize Bain into a full partnership that has fueled 20 years of phenomenal growth. He left Bain & Company in 1992 to return to Bain Capital."
