Cumberland Consulting It's been a pretty good year for Cumberland Consulting, a Brentwood, Tenn.-based healthcare IT firm. Not only has the firm continued to grow both revenues and employees (from 55 last year to 88 this year), the seven-year-old firm has also risen up four places on our Best Small Firms to Work For ranking. It's also the top-rated small IT firm.

And James Lewis, managing partner of Cumberland Consulting, doesn't plan on stopping there. "After a flat 2009, we are expecting to double our revenue in 2010 with high double-digit growth continuing in 2011," he says. And, he says Cumberland plans to finish the year with about 100 consultants.

"Any consulting firm is only as good as its consultants. Enhancing the work experience and quality of life of our consultants can only mean success for our firm," says Lewis. "For our employees, a positive work experience produces better results and therefore positively impacts our consultants' careers and overall success." Ultimately, Cumberland's clients and the patients they serve are the ultimate beneficiaries of outstanding performance on the part of the team, he says.

Several consultants that responded to the survey commented on the firm's generous compensation and benefits packages, which Lewis says the firm is constantly striving to improve. Overall, the firm scored highest in the areas of The Job and Culture, scoring a 4.75 and a 4.68 out of a possible 5.0, respectively.

"We believe our consultants attain a great deal of satisfaction from what we are able to accomplish," he says. "We think it is very important to clearly define our identity in terms of our priorities, our ways of doing business and our approach to serving our clients. We work hard to run our business in close alignment with our identity and operating principles."
