West Monroe Partners

Founded in 2002, Chicago-based West Monroe Partners is a 250-person technology and business advisory services firm whose primary strategic focus is "fundamentally different" from many of their fellow professional services firms, according to President and co-founder Dean Fischer.

Rather than letting market goals drive them, West Monroe "focus first and foremost on people." This approach is reflected in their high survey scores in Culture. The firm works hard, but also knows the importance of an enjoyable workplace. "We have fun at work," says Fischer.

"We strive to maintain the type of environment in which we all want to work—one that is continually challenging, yet team-oriented and collegial; one that makes our people look forward to coming to work every day."

This atmosphere has also helped West Monroe Partners score well in the Job, a score resulting in part from the variety of their consultants' day-to-day work. Fischer credits the firm's small size with their ability to keep their employees regularly working on new projects, as well as directly influencing their outcomes.

"At large firms with large projects and teams, new consultants may work on the same project for several years and may have limited decision-making authority, responsibility, and perspective on the business," he says. People are the secret sauce to the firm's success, Fischer says.

"In the consulting business, the firm with the best people delivers the best service and wins in the marketplace over the long term."
