Human resources consultancy Buck Consultants has found that average salary increases for fiscal year 2008 and increases planned for 2009 are consistent with plans developed in 2007, despite current economic uncertainty. Buck's annual survey of U.S. employers, "Compensation Planning for 2009," indicates average salary increases for 2009 range from 3.8 percent for non-exempt and non-management professionals to 4.0 percent for executives to 4.1 percent for CEOs.

The firm originally conducted its survey mid-year, but went back to its respondents in September to confirm their plans. Buck found that of the 102 respondents who answered the firm's follow-up questions, 16 percent reported that their plans had either changed since mid-2008 or are now under review.

The survey also revealed some growing compensation trends, including an increase in the popularity of the pay-for-performance model.
