The Capacity Crunch It's a tough time to fly—and it might be an even tougher time to find a flight. American Airlines, United Airlines, Continental Airlines and others have announced flight schedule reductions as cost-saving measures by the end of the year.

Here's a rundown of some of the more notable cuts:

American: Included in American's first round of flight reductions is the discontinuation of daily flight service between New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport and London's Stansted Airport. It also is discontinuing service from Boston to San Diego.

Continental: The airline has cut service from Austin, Texas, to Cleveland and Cleveland to San Antonio. It also has cut service altogether from Midway Airport in Chicago, as well as from Chattanooga, Tenn., Green Bay, Wis., Montgomery, Ala., Oakland and Palm Springs, Calif., Reno, Nev., Sarasota and Tallahassee, Fla., and Toledo, Ohio.

Delta: The carrier's goal is a 10 percent reduction by August.

United: United is looking to cut domestic flights by at least 17 percent next year, and at least 4 percent internationally.

US Airways: The airline is reducing flights from its Pittsburgh and Las Vegas hubs.

Air Canada: The airline is looking to cut 2 percent of domestic flights, 13 percent of flights to the U.S. and 7 percent to those elsewhere.

Northwest: The carrier is looking at a 9 percent cut.

Virgin America: In the fourth quarter, the airline is looking to reduce flights by 10 percent.

China Southern Airlines: The carrier plans to cut services on more than 20 international flights, including to Los Angeles, Paris and Singapore.
But while the results may produce some challenges in reaching clients, they also may cause you to reach further into your pocket. Rising fuel costs have also spurred additional charges at check-in, as many carriers are now adding on fuel surcharges and checked-bag fees. On board, get ready to even pay for nonalcoholic beverages on some carriers.

Working virtually never looked so good.
