The Opposable Mind
How Successful Leaders Win Through Integrative Thinking
Roger Martin
Harvard Business School Press
210 pages, $26.95
Integrative thinking: One could interpret author Roger Martin's description of the concept as being the opposite of tunnel vision. Integrative thinking, he says, leads managers to take the best elements of multiple ideas to create a win-win when implementing a solution. It's this type of thinking that leads to flexible work arrangements and other successful unconventional arrangements. Leaders who embrace the concept, says the former Monitor director, find themselves blazing new trails and refusing to accept the status quo, and as such Martin offers examples from Procter & Gamble and Red Hat Software. But he's quick to note that templates for success don't exist. Each manager's situation is different and responding to a situation the way Jack Welch might have won't necessarily bring the desired results. Reading The Opposable Mind, though, might just get those creative juices flowing and enable the results you are looking for.
