When I was a child, my father always used to carry a set of tools in the back of the car. These days, however, there aren't many car problems that can be fixed with only a wrench and some elbow grease.  Although the way cars look on the outside and the way they operate haven't changed all that much in the past half century, under the hood they are radically different.  The modern automobile is a mind-bogglingly complex system comprised of thousands of parts sourced from around the globe, and stuffed with more computing power than a 1980s supercomputer.

The business world has undergone an analogous transformation over the past two decades.  Modest changes in the outward appearances of today's companies belie fundamental differences in the way they operate beneath the surface.  Like the automobile, the modern business is highly complex, operates in a global context, and is infused throughout with IT.
