What is Consulting Magazine’s Best Firms survey?

Consulting Magazine’s Best Firms survey is open to all consulting firms that currently employ 200 billable consultants.

Ever since we published the results of the first Consulting Magazine Best Firms to Work For survey in 2001, our Best Firms initiative has been the most comprehensive, independent source of opinion about the quality of life within the consulting professions top firms. Moreover, the surveys results have led to changes in policies and practices at numerous consulting firms, helping improve the professional lives of thousands of consultants. The real proof of the value of the rankings is the popularity of our Best Firms issue among both MBA students and career-building consultants.

Our methodology is transparent and firm management throughout the consulting industry continuously consult with the magazine on making it better. We take privacy very seriously; The information you provide is STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL. All results will be shared in aggregate with no personal identifiers.

Nearly, all of the firms we survey are fully cooperating. If there's one revelation the survey results help to underscore, it is the free flow of information is to the benefit of all consultants, and their chosen profession.

How are consulting firms evaluated?

Firms are evaluated by their consultants in six equally weighted categories: Career Development, Compensation & Benefits, Culture, Leadership, On the Job and Work/Life.

How is the Best Firms survey conducted?

By promoting the Best Firm Survey using Consulting Magazine, Consulting Magazine.com and C-Mag Online, Consulting Magazine is able to secure a significant sampling of consultants within many leading firms. In the event that a particular firm’s “survey sample” is smaller than required, Consulting Magazine will work closely with eligible firms to achieve a larger sample.

How can I help my firm achieve a significant sampling?

Consulting Magazine can supply you with a link for the Web-based survey that can be distributed within your firm. Again, your participation is helpful but not required. For more information,

Do you seek survey responses from both senior and junior consultants?

Yes, but please note we accept no more than a third of a firm’s responses to be from the ranks of partner and above.

How many responses do you need from my firm?

It varies from firm to firm. A quick rule of thumb is we need at least 35 responses for smaller firms but at least 100 for the larger firms.

Who is eligible to view the survey’s data?

The survey’s data is viewed by the editors of Consulting Magazine, and is used for the purposes of publishing Consulting Magazine’s annual Top 10 Best Firms to Work For ranking and cover article. However, those firms participating in Consulting Magazine's Best Firms To Work For Survey are eligible to draw research from our Best Firm's Data Center, allowing them to benchmark their talent management best practices against the industry's leading firms. Data related to the performance of individual firms is confidential and is not available to other survey participants.

What happens if my firm participates, but does not make the Top 10 Best Firm Ranking?

The Best Firms article reveals only the 10 firms that top our ranking. Firms which score outside the top 10 are listed as a “participants,” but are NOT ranked.

Do you need anything else from the firm?

So happy you asked! Please give us any supplementary information about what makes your firm a great place to work. For example, this may include recruiting brochures that include details about your firm’s benefits, perks and special programs. This information should be submitted by early August.
