Romil Bahl - Infosys ConsultingWhile all consulting firms may claim to be a unique proposition, Infosys Consulting does things a bit differently. The Fremont, Calif.-based firm certainly doesn’t act like a traditional consulting firm, and Romil Bahl, the managing director of Infosys Consulting, likes it that way.

“We absolutely want to eradicate some to the abuses of the consulting industry,” Bahl says. “Over the years, I think we (me included) got a little arrogant - walking into a client and within ten minutes start to tell them how to run their business better. Those days are over. Now, the client absolutely expects and demands real delivery.” And delivery is something Infosys knows a thing or two about. Infosys delivers 94 percent of its projects on time and on budget. That’s about double the industry average in the technology and IT space. “We have a rigorous approach to consulting. Sometimes clients find the discipline daunting.” Bahl says. “But as we get into the process, and the project comes in on time and on budget, they see the value we bring.”

One way to ensure that happens, Bahl says, is to make sure Infosys remains “paranoid about making sure we’re bringing in the top talent.” Infosys has a goal of only bringing in the top 5 percent of consultants from other firms. Bahl, who runs recruiting, says he actually asks for performance evaluations as a safeguard. “My biggest challenge isn’t attracting people; it’s getting them away from their old firms.” The top 5 percent are loved by their current employers, Bahl says. “Let’s just say that I’ve gotten quite a few people 40 percent raises.”

    Hi Romil,

Wanted to congratulate you on this achievement. Although I represent one of your most key competitors (IBM GBS) was excited to read about you as we spend a year or two in DMET (you were my 3rd year). I do not expect you to remember me after almost 18 years, but I could guess it right away seeing your name.

    Wish you all the best!

    Regards,
    Sanjoy Roy
