Censeo CEO: Expertise is Our Core Value proposition

Censeo President and CEO Raj Sharma recently went through a rough breakup: one with a client. In fact, the client was the second-biggest on his roster. But he says there was a disconnect between Censeo’s values and the clients’. The situation, though, speaks to Sharma’s emphasis of quality over quantity. “We don’t want our company to be run based on or be driven by artificial revenue goals. What’s more important to us is that we grow the business the right way,” he says. After leaving Booz Allen Hamilton, Sharma launched Censeo five years ago with a handful of partners. It is now about 50 consultants. Sharma recently spoke with Consulting about Censeo’s model.

Brad Kitchens, president and CEO of ScottMadden, says being the tortoise has been the key to success. “We have not enjoyed some of the 1999-2000 30 to 40 percent growth that some firms enjoyed, but nor have we struggled with the subsequent 30 to 40 percent contraction that many of those same organization faced when Y2K and some of the ERP activity slowed down.

Harold L. Sirkin, a senior partner at The Boston Consulting Group and global leader of the firm’s Operations practice, saw a tsunami coming. That tsunami of global companies that are ready to take on traditional corporate powerhouses is the result of what Sirkin calls “globality. ”There’s been a group of people working on this inside BCG. It’s probably our largest single research expenditure focusing on this phenomenon and what it all means,” says Sirkin, adding that a new practice called Global Advantage launched for just that purpose. He’s co-authored a book of the same name that with colleagues James W. Hemerling and Arindam K. Bhattacharya. However, he says many U.S. companies are in denial about the impact of this evolution. He recently discussed the book and its impetus with Consulting:

Bain & Company, says partner Hernan Saenz, has always been a welcoming place for those of Latino origin. But he’s working to take Bain’s Latino initiatives to the next level, spearheading the new version of Latinos@Bain, a once informal network that now is charged with formal recruiting and mentoring efforts. “The program’s mission is to make Bain & Company the best career for Latino business talent,” he says. And the program is certain to have staying power. “Is this passing fad? Look at the statistics—one-fourth of the children in the United States under the age of five is of Hispanic origin. The population is becoming more diverse every day. And it means that firms will need diverse workforces to understand their customers better.” Saenz recently spoke with Consulting about Latinos@Bain.

When Earle Steinberg started leading Thomas Group as CEO in March, he had some significant challenges ahead of him. Within a month, the firm would announce a one-third reduction in its approximately 155-person staff. Government business was down 31 percent in the first quarter, and revenue decreased 17 percent over that same period. But Steinberg is confident change can happen from the inside. With 32 years of management consulting experience behind him, Steinberg had consistently been looked to for answers from clients. But the question remains: Does he have the answers now? Consulting spoke with Steinberg about the new environment at the firm.

Dick Finnegan, employee retention expert and president of Finnegan Mackenzie, a firm dedicated to the same cause, recently spoke with Consulting in advance of his keynote address at Consulting magazine’s Recruiting and Retention in Consulting (hotlink to http://www.consultingmag.com/recruitretain/) event to be held June 24 in Chicago. Finnegan, whose book RetentionMap is due out next year, says he’s truly filling a need when it comes to retention strategies. Says Finnegan: “If you are in accounting or in purchasing or in sales, there are established strategies and tactics for what to do, but there is no established practice for cutting turnover.” Here, Finnegan offers his thoughts on the topic.

A nonprofit consultancy? Can such a thing exist? Yes, says Michael Pirron, CEO and founder of Impact Makers, a nonprofit consulting firm headquartered in Richmond, Va. Pirron, an ex-Andersen and ex-Accenture consultant, has traveled the world and worked in various capacities, but his current endeavor, a consultancy of 10, allows him to tap into his need to give back. “I’ve always tried to figure out how to be involved in the community where I live and at the same time pay the bills,” he says. The company made about a half million in revenue in its first year and gave its chosen charity $41,000—and 200 consulting hours. Consulting talked with Pirron about the innovative—and clearly successful—model.

Clark: Small Steps Lead to EPIC Change

Author and consultant Tim Clark saw change go awry too many times. “What compelled me to write the book is that I was witnessing so many instances of large initiatives failing, and when we would do the post-mortem on the initiative, it was clear that the initiative did not fail on strategy [or operations]. So we would come back to the conclusion that the organization and its leaders were failing to engage people and have them stay with it.” His new book, EPIC Change, which looks at the leadership issues around change initiatives, hits shelves this month. He recently spoke to Consulting about the EPIC (evaluate, prepare, implement and consolidate) model the book explores.

When is a new consultancy not a new consultancy? Perhaps when it’s the product of many years of both experience and long-term planning. Jess Varughese, managing partner of New York-based Milestone Advisory Services, has an extensive history in mergers and acquisitions with KPMG, and between Varughese and Milestone’s other two partners, Konstantine Kostakis and Peter Bond, Milestone’s leadership has more than 50 years of capital markets and wholesale financial services expertise.

Jocelyn Cunningham, a principal with Deloitte Consulting and its U.S. leader for the securities and capital markets, is still bullish on the financial services sector. The market certainly has to overcome some challenges, she says, but thinks maybe some of the problems have been sensationalized a bit by the press. That, of course, crumbles consumer confidence. And some more good news—historically, election years have been kind to the market. “I think whoever comes into office will have their fair share of challenges to deal with, but I don’t think they’ll have to worry about pulling the country out of a recession,” Cunningham says.

The report is based on the firm’s 2007 Finance Book of Numbers, a culmination of a year’s worth of research that highlights key takeaways for chief financial officers. Hackett expected compliance costs to start to drop for all companies, now that Sarbanes-Oxley marks five years. “We were expecting that overall burden of the project, as it were, the compliance costs, to come down, and what we’re finding at leading companies, it certain did, but for [others], it didn’t.” Hall spoke with Consulting about the research and life in a post S-O world.

Cary McMillan is taking on the Big 4. “We’re a Big 4 quality tax firm that can serve them like the Big 4 used to before Sarbanes-Oxley and a lot of the increased costs and bureaucracy that have driven really a wedge between those firms and their clients,” says the CEO of True Partners Consulting, a Chicago-based firm that’s less than two years old. Founded by ex-Arthur Andersen employees, the firm is poised to do $20 million this year in billing. While people may have thought that the firm, McMillan jokes, was a dating agency when it opened, others are taking notice now, particularly as the firm, which has seven U.S. offices, starts expanding overseas. McMillan recently spoke with Consulting about the firm’s growth plans.

Dean Fischer, president and co-founder of Chicago-headquartered West Monroe Partners,
heads a firm that focuses on getting a good “gene pool.” According to Fischer,
that means people who fit into the positive culture at the firm, typically have a good deal of
technical knowledge and probably do not have an MBA. The result? Nonstop growth—
the firm, which opened in 2002, now boasts 220 billable consultants. Growth also includes
a new office opening in Dallas in just a few weeks and big-name clients like Merrill Lynch
and Bristol-Myers Squibb. Here, Fischer opens up about his surprise at the talent challenges before him and how happy employees in turn create happy clients.
