»The 2011 Best Firms to Work For: 5) Deloitte Consulting

Jim MoffattDeloitte Consulting’s rapid rise up Consulting magazine’s Best Firms to Work For rankings continues this year as the firm moves up to No. 5.

Jim Moffatt, who was named Chairman and CEO of Deloitte Consulting in May, says the award is particularly meaningful because it’s based on input from Deloitte practitioners. “That we have continued to be on the list during a time of incredible growth is confirmation that we are focused on the things that matter most to our people: serving clients with distinction, providing a rich and rewarding experience for our people, and giving back to our communities,” Moffatt says. “Our people work hard to make Deloitte successful, and we make significant investments in various talent and development initiatives to make our people successful. For our people to recognize this tells me that we continue to foster a culture that attracts, develops, and retains the best consulting talent.”

To that end, Deloitte is set to launch its $300 million Deloitte University in the fall. “This is truly a game-changer for us,” Moffatt says. “DU is the culmination of our multi-year career development transformation that will significantly enhance the leadership and professional development of our people. It is critical to their success as our future leaders. We know that we have the best talent in the world and we continue to invest in developing them.”

And Deloitte does, indeed, invest in them. In 2010, Moffatt says the firm paid the largest bonuses ever and increased the bonus targets for every level. This year, Deloitte extended bonuses to its Consultant level, and tripled its funding for its on-the-spot recognition program. And the firm still offers a traditional pension plan.

Meanwhile, when you ask Moffatt what differentiates Deloitte, he points to the firm’s multi-faceted breadth of offerings, including strategy and operations, human capital, technology, financial advisory and risk. “We are unique in that we have the capability to implement the strategy we recommend,” he says.

“One reason we are able to build long-lasting client relationships is that we are able to help them solve their complex business problems, across their value chain.”
And that “depth and breadth” translates into even more opportunities for its people. “From the moment they walk in our doors, our people are given challenging projects along with access to senior leaders, often working side-by-side with them on a range of topics across multiple industries,” he says. “We provide the development and support they need to take risks and grow. We pride ourselves on being a firm where leaders thrive.”

Q&A
On the Best Firms to Work For survey, Deloitte Consulting scored highest in the areas of Career Development, Firm Leadership and Client Engagement. Consulting asked Jim Moffatt, Chairman and CEO of Deloitte Consulting why the firm excelled in these areas. His response follows.

Career Development
“Over the last several years, we have been transforming our career development programs and we have a fully refreshed strategy to guide the way our people develop and steer their careers. Our journey is culminating in the opening of Deloitte University, our new $300 million learning and leadership development center, this fall. Our learning focuses on two core components. First, we emphasize four skill areas—technical, industry, leadership, and professional—to help all of our practitioners be fully rounded business professionals. Second, we continually incorporate leading-edge learning mechanisms to bring the latest thinking to our people.”

Firm Leadership

“Our people tell us they want opportunities to connect more with leadership. They look to our leaders for career advocacy and for an understanding of where the firm is going in the future. We have invested in key talent programs focused on increasing the leader to practitioner connection. A talent program I am particularly proud of is ‘Counselor Effectiveness,’ which both reinforces core skills and enhances our practitioners skills as career advocates.”

Client Engagement
“Our clients hire, and rehire, us because of our relentless focus on bringing value. We help the world’s leading organizations solve their most complex and pressing business issues, and we bring that value to them team by team, practitioner by practitioner. As an organization, we focus on providing the tools, resources and support for our practitioners that allow them to consistently exceed our clients’ expectations.”
